The County of Renfrew will be working on the next phase of the Algonquin Trail in 2023. An update was provided to the Development and Property Committee by Director Jason Davis on January 9th. Davis says the County of Renfrew has completed 110 kilometers of the Algonquin Trail from the Town of Arnprior to Petawawa and adds the next phase will be through Garrison Petawawa, Chalk River to the Township of Papineau-Cameron.
The Director of Development and Property adds they received about 100,000 tonnes of limestone stone dust from the Ministry of Transportation two years ago with stockpiles of aggregate sitting in Chalk River and Deux-Rivières.
Davis says the County of Renfrew is hopeful to complete the next 110 kilometers of trail within two years. He adds the Renfrew County is working with Lanark and Frontenac Counties to look at purchasing another 40 to 50 kilometers of the K&P Trail from the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority.
The County of Renfrew has received grant funding through the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Active Transportation Fund (AFT) to enhance and improve the Algonquin Trail for 52 kilometers west of Laurentian Hills.
In 2016, the County of Renfrew, Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron purchased 300 kilometers of the CP Rail Line from Smiths Falls to Mattawa. The County of Renfrew owns approximately 240 kilometers of the Algonquin Trail.
