Food insecurity is becoming a serious public health problem, according to a recent report from the Renfrew County and District Health Unit.
At the Tuesday, December 13th Town Council meeting in Renfrew, County Warden Peter Emon went over a recent RCHDU report that lays out how hard food insecurity hits us locally.
County Warden Peter Emon notes one in seven households within the district are food insecure and while being on social assistance does increase the risk, the report adds that roughly half of Canadian homes facing food insecurity last year had salary or wages.
The Health Unit’s report goes on to say food insecurity affecting local children, as one in five Ontario children live in a food insecure household.
The report also says that people living in food insecure homes are as much as 69% more likely to suffer from conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and depression.
