The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP is sharing some safe winter driving tips. The message comes as heavy snowfall is expected starting Thursday night and continuing Friday. Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory and a winter weather travel advisory calling for up to 15 centimeters of snowfall across the Ottawa Valley.
Local police say to stay alert, slow down and stay in control. If visibility is reduced when driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The OPP says drive according to current road conditions, keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors and lights, consider installing winter tires, keep an ample supply of windshield washer fluid in your vehicle and give yourself extra time to get where you need to go.
The OPP also recommend carrying certain items in your vehicle in case of an emergency including:
- A charged cell phone in case of an emergency.
- An ice scraper, snow brush, a small shovel, sand, salt or other traction aid.
- Booster cables, road flares, fuel line anti-freeze, and tow rope.
- Extra clothing and footwear, a blanket, high energy non-perishable food, matches and a candle.
- Flashlight, small tool kit, first aid kit.
