Renfrew Mayor Don Eady and Mayor-elect Tom Sidney lay a wreath at the Low Square Cenotaph on Friday morning.
Renfrew hosted Remembrance Day ceremonies under sunshine Friday morning as residents overflowed from the Low Square Cenotaph onto both sidewalks on Raglan Street.
The ceremony began with veterans and military personnel making a short march from the nearby Legion Branch 148 before Branch President Bruce Ferguson offered a prayer to those who have fallen in the line of service.
Veterans and military personnel marched down Raglan Street to the downtown cenotaph to start the ceremony, with Furgeson offering an opening prayer before a children’s choir sang the hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” and the 1915 John McCrae poem “In Flanders Fields.”
Community figures and government representatives would later lay wreaths under the downtown cenotaph, including local Member of Provincial Parliament John Yakabuski, current Mayor Don Eady, and Mayor-elect Tom Sidney.
Ferguson tells myFM that he’s happy to see so many residents join them on the day.
He’s also encouraged by the turnout of young people for the event, especially school aged children and youth.
Ferguson notes that the Legion does work with our local schools to keep kids involved in Remembrance Day.
He and the rest of the Legion members of Branch 148 are set to host a dinner tonight as part of their Remembrance Day ceremonies starting at 5:00 with a social hour. Tickets were on sale earlier this week.
