An orange flag was raised outside Town Hall on Thursday afternoon, commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Mayor Don Eady led with a few words on the importance of honouring and remembering the survivors and victims of the residential school system. While he won’t be at the helm to commemorate next year’s proceedings, Eady hopes that Council in future terms continues to do so as well.
Town Clerk Victoria Charbonneau echoed the statements from Mayor Eady, noting it was important to have municipal staff gather to reflect on the harm caused by the residential school system.
The ceremony was attended by a small group of town staff and representatives from the local police, but Charbonneau hopes the event will grow moving forward.
She adds that Town Hall is closed for today’s national holiday, and that the flag will fly in Low Square until Monday.
