Guy Longtin has put his fireman’s helmet into the ring for a spot on town council in Renfrew. Longtin spent 26 years as the lead fireman in Renfrew from 1992 to 2018, and believes that his experience working with Town Council in that role gives him a leg up on some of the less experienced running for the open seats on council.
Longtin tells myFM that he’s focusing on accountability with the town’s upcoming budget as the cost of everything continues to go up. While he believes most of the town’s departments have been responsible in handling their money, he wants to ensure every dollar is being put to good use.
That includes major infrastructure projects. Longtin says that nobody’s to blame for the sudden increase of construction materials that has put the Ma-Te-Way Centre expansion over budget, but now it’s up to the Town Council to figure out how to pay for it.
He also points to improving the condition of Renfrew’s roads as an important task for the town, as well as working to build a long-awaited swimming pool.
Longtin adds that he likes how the current council has sourced tax dollars from the government for town projects, he says that he wants to dig even deeper into those revenue streams to help Renfrew grow.
Longtin is one of eight candidates running for five spots on council in the municipal election. Other candidates include Andrew Dick, Clint McWhirter, Jason Legris, Adam Laviolette, Kyle Cybulski, John McDonald, and Brady Enright.
Election day in Renfrew is October 24th.
