There has been an increase in sightings of bears across the Ottawa Valley, so it may be a good time for a refresher course on who to call, or when to call, or not.
(Since the first of this month, Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has responded to six bear sightings in the Pembroke and Petawawa area.)
(While bear sightings are more common in western and northern reaches of Renfrew County, they can occur anywhere.)
The public is reminded that black bears that come into a populated area aren’t always a threat to public safety.
However, if a bear is entering a schoolyard when school is in session, entering or trying to enter a residence, wandering into a public gathering, stalking people and lingering at a site or killing livestock/pets and lingering on site, you should call 911.
Ontario Provincial Police are first responders for emergency situations. At the request of the police, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will also respond to emergency situations.
It is deemed a Non-Emergency Encounter if the black bear is roaming around, checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue, moving through a backyard or field but not lingering- or is seen in a tree.
In this case, call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 and trained staff will advise you on a course of action if necessary.
