Renfrew Town Council knew it had a pricey band-aid to rip off at a special meeting on Thursday, August 18th.
Reeve Peter Emon tells myFM that a new cost estimate adds an extra $4.8 million to the large-scale project underway.
Emon says the first estimate, which was devised through blueprints and diagrams for the new MAC facilities, came out to just over $21 million. The new quote comes in at around $26 million, a number that stems from studies done on the project while it’s part-way completed and covers unforeseen costs like work changes and rising supplier costs.
He adds that Town Council is not surprised by the news, explaining some project costs in other municipalities are up by as much as 40%.
Town staff have worked with the contractors and suppliers working on the project to figure out where the it’s headed, and Emon says there are no changes to project expected at this time.
Emon notes that the Town of Renfrew will be in touch with both the provincial and federal governments, who supplied a portion of the funding for the project through a grant, to access some of those funds immediately.
