Did you hear about Elvis’ three concerts in Canada? Or how about the peculiar notes in Prime Minister’s Mackenzie King’s diary?
Jamie Bramburger, the Manager of Student and Community Affairs, tells myFM that four virtual Speaker Series events will take place from August to October.
Bramburger says the event has been a part of the Pembroke Campus’ events programming for some time, but recently moved online in order to keep running during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bramburger says the positive response to the virtual Speaker Series means that it will continue over Zoom.
The upcoming dates coincide with important anniversaries for the subject matter. The series begins with author Brandon Yip with a presentation on Elvis Presley’s brief set of concerts in Canada, set for the anniversary of Presley’s death on Thursday, August 16th.
Two days later on Saturday, August 18th, author Hugh Brewster discusses the ill-fated Dieppe Raid, often considered the worst day for Canadian forces during World War II.
Next, author and historian Christopher Dummitt will go over the boundaries of public and private information, as told through the notes left in Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s diary on Wednesday, September 14th.
Lastly, on Thursday, October 13th, author Andrew Cohen will talk about humanity’s close brush with nuclear war, sixty years after the Cuban Missile Crisis held the world in fear for two weeks.
Registration is open for all four stops along the Virtual Speaker Series on the Algonquin College Pembroke Campus’ website
