It appears the VIA Rail caboose on O’Brien Road will survive for the time being.
Renfrew Town Council held a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday, June 21st in an attempt to end the debate on either disposing of or repainting the train car near Mask Road.
Councilor Arlene Jamieson suggested to sell the caboose to an private buyer, similar to how Smiths Falls dealt with their old trains.
Speaking on behalf of the Save the Caboose group, who wish to take on painting the train car themselves, Councilor Sandi Heins says they believe gathering money to cover the refurbishing will be no problem.
Councilor Tom Sidney appreciates the Save the Caboose group’s efforts to keep the car in place, but believes the caboose should be the town’s project if it remains on public land.
Council voted 5-2 against selling off the caboose, but tabled a vote on the Save the Caboose group’s plan until next week.
