The theme, “Safer You, Safer Me” becomes obvious when you realize law enforcement across the country are extremely concerned about the rise in inattentive behaviours (as well as other factors) that are pushing statistics to ten-year highs.
107 fatalities on Ontario Provincial Police-patrolled roads so far this year is a motor vehicle fatality rate the OPP has not seen in a decade.
Two driving behaviours stand out in this year’s preventable road deaths.
Fatalities linked to driver inattention are up 79 per cent over this time last year, while Alcohol/drug-related fatalities are also up, 36 per cent.
As to the other of the four principal causes of accidents- while the percentage haven’t changed much, speeding remains the greatest killer on Ontario roads, while not using your seatbelt has claimed 15 lives this year in the Province.
During the annual Canada Road Safety Week campaign, the OPP will join national policing partners to conduct robust enforcement and education initiatives, focused on this year’s campaign theme “Safer You. Safer Me”.
