In direct response to concerns raised from citizens regarding use along the Algonquin Trail, the County of Renfrew is installing two urban gates. The gates would be installed in or around Dairy and Resmer Roads on the Algonquin Trail in Laurentian Valley.
Manager of GIS and Forestry Jason Davis says county staff reviewed a number of concerns from residents in the area like speeding, not stopping at stop signs, trespassing and noise.
During the Township of Laurentian Valley council meeting on May 3rd, councillor Allen Wren suggested putting up gates as close to stop signs as possible to get vehicles to slow down and alleviate speeding problems on the trail.
Other options the township considered, including fencing and twinning the trail would have cost the taxpayers roughly $250,000.
Renfrew County Warden and Laurentian Valley Reeve Debbie Robinson says safety is a priority, but adds the trail will not be ended if that’s what some people are hoping.
Robinson says the gates will force ATV’s and snowmobiles to slow down, stop and look for traffic.
As part of the County of Renfrew Development and Property Committee meeting on May 10th, 2022, staff were directed to install two additional gates as part of planned work in 2022.
