The Kemptville 73’s made the first round CCHL playoff series interesting, but it’s the Renfrew Wolves who are moving on after Thursday’s 5-1 win at the North Grenville Municipal Centre.
Renfrew came in to Game Six having dropped two games in a row, including Tuesday’s heartbreaker loss in double-overtime. On the other hand, Kemptville were doing their best to fight back from a 3-0 series deficit and force a decisive game seven.
It seemed like the 73’s were on pace to force that final matchup, as a little more than a minute into the game Patrick J. Larkin would score to give Kemptville an early 1-0 lead.
That lead held into the second period, but it was only a matter of time before Renfrew went on the counterattack. Mason Goldie found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 on a feed from Noah Vom Scheidt. Three minutes later, Vom Scheidt would intercept a cross-ice pass and break out for a one on one chance of his own. The puck trickled past 73’s goaltender Tyler Laureault to give Renfrew a 2-1 lead.
The Wolves were not done there, as Joey Kennelly added to the lead on the powerplay to bring the score to 3-1. Renfrew continued to capitalize on their chances into the third period, as Elvis Slack score his fourth goal of the series midway through the frame. Alex Rossides provided an empty net dagger in the final seconds of play to bring the game to it’s final score, 5-1.
Noah Vom Scheidt earned first star of the game for his goal and three assists. Kemptville’s Jeff Taylor and Renfrew’s Mason Goldie were second and third star, respectively.
Wolves netminder Will Craig stopped 33 shots on 34 attempts for the win. Kemptville’s Tyler Laureault made 19 saves on 23 attempts.
Renfrew will have to wait for game seven in the series between Brockville and Pembroke before they know who they play in the Bogart Cup Semi Finals.
