Scammers will offer you anything in order to get at your hard earned money, including the promise of a puppy.
That’s one complaint that Killaloe OPP are busy with at the moment, after someone in the Township of Bonnechere Valley answered an ad to buy a puppy. The victim sent out a sum of money by e-transfer, but never received the dog.
Police are also on the trail of a different fraudster after they got a call from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan Ontario First Nation Territory last week.
The victim donated money to someone online to support a cause. They were told that after sending the donation, they would receive an even larger sum of money in return. The online individual became increasingly demanding, leading to the victim contacting the police.
Police tell myFM that you should never send money to anyone claiming you’ve won a prize and need to send money to receive that prize. Never provide personal information like your name, date of birth, or address over the phone, text or email unless you’re the one who started the conversation. You should also never give out your financial information or social insurance number, either.
If you have given out these details, contact your financial institution immediately.
