The County of Renfrew is moving forward with plans to build affordable and supportive housing units in the City of Pembroke.
The plan is to build a minimum of six, two bedroom units, that are fully accessible, on a single ground floor level and can accommodate both seniors and people with disabilities. A seventh unit would include a dedicated area for Personal Support Workers (PSW’s) and community paramedics to use. The new affordable and supportive housing units would be approximately 720 square feet with two bedrooms, one bathroom and address mobility issues. The housing complex would be built at the corner of Lea Street and Douglas Street in the City of Pembroke, on property owned by the Renfrew County Housing Corporation.
Two bids were received from contractors to complete the work and it was determined that William Sons from Petawawa best fit the scope of the project. Unfortunately, costs presented in the proposal exceeded the current budget for this project. County Council have directed staff to go back to the drawing board and issue a request for Architectural Services to look for efficiencies and potential cost savings.
Construction on the community housing project was expected to start in the spring of 2022 with a goal to be complete by March 31st of 2023. The County of Renfrew has entered into a contribution agreement for funding from the province of Ontario to build the affordable and supportive housing units.
