Speeding continues to be a primary cause of road fatalities in Ontario, as OPP have released their 2021 summary.
81 lives were lost in haste, marking a 10-year high in speed-related road deaths.
A total of 315 people died on OPP-patrolled roads last year, up three per cent over 2020.
Inattentive driving was the fastest-growing cause of fatalities, up 29 percent over the previous year.
Seatbelt-related deaths also declined over the previous year, while alcohol/drug-related deaths decreased by nearly 50 per cent.
Collisions were up eight per cent in 2021 over the previous year, with OPP officers responding to 60,544 road crashes.
By vehicle category, Motorcycle fatalities were down 17 per cent, with 35 people losing their lives last year.
Commercial vehicle collisions showed a worrisome increase in both the number of crashes, up 17 percent, while fatalities involving CMVs were up 26 percent as 72 people losing their lives in these collisions.
There were 23 fatal marine incidents within OPP jurisdictions and 22 off-road vehicle fatalities in 2021.
