COVID-19 hospitalizations are at an all-time high in Renfrew County and District. There are currently nine local residents in the hospital including two in the intensive care units.
Acting Medical Officer of Health with the Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU), Dr. Robert Cushman, says unvaccinated individuals make up a large number of the local hospital admissions and recent deaths.
Cushman says most of the deaths are in people over the age of 60 and some have underlying health concerns, but says it’s sad to see the number of people in hospital and intensive care unit who are not vaccinated.
The RCDHU Acting Medical Officer of Health says more than half of the local residents in hospital and intensive care units are not vaccinated.
With reports indicating the Omicron variant is more mild, Cushman says due to the rapid spread, even if the symptoms are more mild, we’re seeing an increase in COVID-19 patients needing hospital care.
More than one quarter of the new COVID-19 infections (585 of 1870) reported by the RCDHU, since the start of the pandemic back in March of 2020, have been confirmed in the last 7-days.
Five of the 16 deaths linked to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic in Renfrew County and District have also come in the last week.
