There are some new homes on Olmstead and Jeffrey Lakes in Renfrew County, but not on the land.
Fish, turtles, and macroinvertebrates now have more natural areas to rest, grow, and hide from predators thanks to a community-led effort that added 18 piles of woody debris back into the two lakes.
Monica Seidel of Watersheds Canada says her group normal helps co-ordinate three such projects annually in Eastern Ontario, and when invited to help, couldn’t resist the opportunity.
Seidel says the brush-bundle concept is simple, but effective.
The success of the initiative is monitored by taking underwater video at the two-year mark and collated with fish counts taken by volunteers.
