We’ve shared the Twelve Scams of Christmas, but fraudsters have a few other Holiday tricks up their sleeves.
Phone or in-person appeals to donate to bogus charities is a favourite.
In this case you should ask for legitimate identification and/or charity registration numbers.
“Free” holiday apps specifically designed for holiday shopping may include features to steal victim’s credentials and data. Always use official app store apps, and remember that full version downloads may include malware that can compromise your system.
Sometimes you’ll get bogus tracking information for unsent packages which can prompt the same concerns.
Don’t use the free wifi offered at a coffee shop to place product orders- if it’s free, it’s free for anyone to see.
If you find any suspicious purchases listed on a credit statement, report them right away- fraudster love nothing better than a shopping spree at another’s expense.
If you’ve been stung, contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
