Renfrew’s ad hoc Caboose Committee members are on board with first steps in their campaign to refurbish the Town’s CP caboose to its former glory.
Spokesperson Doug Sidock tells myFM the news that the attraction was nearing the end of the line caught residents by surprise.
Sidock says the immediate obstacle was that the rail car, like others of the era, had been painted with a lead-base application.
That job can’t be done by just anyone- an insured contractor with a licence to remove lead paint must carry out the task and remove the debris to a hazardous waste disposal site.
Challenges after the caboose is repainted include accessibility concerns, and what is estimated as a three-stage process should tally up to a 50 thousand dollar tab- but Sidock says formal fundraising has yet to begin.
While there has to be further talks with the Town of Renfrew, Councillor Sandi Heins is the formal liaison with the ad-hoc committee.
