Police are reminding local residents there are many sophisticated frauds and scams in Canada.
Last week (November 9th), Killaloe OPP responded to a fraud call in Madawaska Valley.
The victim was told to send money by e-transfer to someone they met on Instagram.
Two days later, officers responded to a fraud call in Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Township.
The victim was contacted by phone and told they won a large sum of money.
They were told to send money and gift cards for taxes on the lottery winnings before receiving the prize.
Police are providing the following safety tips to protect yourself:
- Never provide personal information such as name, date of birth or address by phone, text or e-mail unless you initiated it.
- Never provide financial information or social insurance number by phone, text or e-mail unless you initiated it.
- Never purchase and send gift card information to anyone claiming that you must do this to collect a prize.
- Never send money in any form to anyone claiming you have won a prize and need to send money to receive that prize.
- Immediately contact your financial institution if you have provided any of your financial information.
The OPP says to never give out personal information unless you have verified the source and the person asking for it is legally entitled to that information.
