Canada Day marked an important transition in campaigns to reduce the prevalence of Stunt Racing in Ontario.
That’s when enhanced penalties came into play.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind the public that the first change was an increase in the previous seven-day vehicle impoundment period to 14 days.
The second change was the introduction of a lower speed threshold for street racing offenders on municipal roads.
On roads with a posted limit of less than 80 km/h, drivers caught traveling 40 clicks over now face the Stunt Racing charge- where previously the infraction point was 50k.
Under the new amended legislation, offence fines jump drastically. The minimum fine can now be between 200 and 2000 dollars, while the maximum fine is now between 1000 and 10,000 dollars.
The new legislation means you could be waiting quite some time before you’re ever allowed to drive again.
A Court-ordered licence suspension of 2 years for a first conviction and 10 years for a second conviction now applies.
Your initial driver’s licence suspension following arrest now jumps to 30 days from the previous 7-day suspension.
Over the past three years, speed has been the top contributing factor in road fatalities.
