Despite being extended the right to vote in Federal Elections back in 1960, there continue to be participation issues for Canada’s Indigenous communities.
In Monday’s Federal Election there were delays to opening certain Elections Canada polling stations on an Alberta First Nation, and in two other cases, voting did not happen at all.
In BC, a polling station on Yekooche (yeh-KOO’-chee) First Nation failed to open, while Six Nations Confederacy Chiefs in the Ontario riding of Brantford Brant did not allow a polling station on their territory, as they claimed it was a Treaty violation.
Two other polling stations in Indigenous communities in the Alberta riding of Grand Prairie-Mackenzie were locked and could not be opened to voters until 1 p-m., when facilities staff were located.
