A new 9-hole Disc Golf course is opening this weekend at Round Lake Centre Park.
The Disc Golf course located at 545 Albert Street in Round Lake, about an hour outside of Renfrew, goes through the park and forest and each hole has a sign with a par value showing how far away it is.
There’s a grand opening event on Saturday (September 11th) from 1:00pm to 3:00pm where you can try the sport and enjoy a free BBQ.
Chris Neff, the Community Development Coordinator with the Township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards, says it’s similar to golf, but instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you’re throwing a disc into a tower with chains.
Neff says they have three different discs you would throw (a heavier disc/driver, a mid range disc that floats and a putter that plays like a frisbee).
He says it takes about 30 to 45 minutes to play a round by yourself and up to an hour and a half in a group depending on how fast you’re going.
For those who don’t have the necessary equipment, starting next week, the gear needed to play Disc Golf can be rented from the Killaloe and District Public Library at no cost for up to one week.
Neff says they’re trying to include more active living for youth and adults in Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards.
He adds Disc Golf is a fun, low impact activity that’s fun for all ages and all skill levels.
Funding to install the Disc Golf course was provided through the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.
Neff says they plan to start a youth league on Wednesdays and an adult league on Thursdays.
