With the great outdoors calling and campgrounds accommodating, remember Ontario’s bears haven’t gone anywhere.
Bears have a keen sense of smell, and are attracted by the odour of all food and garbage.
Planning ahead and taking precautions will minimize potential encounters.
When hiking, keep kids between their adult companions and alert them they should never approach or run from a bear.
Keep your dogs on a leash while camping; giving them free reign may see a bear follow them.
Use bear-resistant containers or sealed plastic bags to store your food.
Hang your edible provisions at least four metres above the ground and three metres from any tree limb.
Never cook, eat or store food in your tent.
Clean fish away from your campsite, burn scraps and fat and drain your dishwater.
