A former Arnprior resident will spend close to 7.5-years behind bars for series of crimes he’s been found guilty of.
75-year-old William or “Bill” Kirby Kirby is currently in custody at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre and is serving a 3.5-year sentence (43-months) for sexual assault, pointing a firearm, common assault and assault.
This morning (June 22nd, 2021), Justice Martin James sentenced Kirby to another 4-years in jail for kidnapping, aggravated assault and issuing threats.
The sentences will run consecutively, meaning Kirby will have to finish serving his 3.5-year sentence before the 4-year sentence starts.
Justice James says charges stem from an incident in September of 2018 where Kirby took his long-time domestic partner against her will to a secluded spot in the country and stabbed her.
During trial, the court heard how Kirby picked up the victim on her lunch break at Sandvik in Arnprior and drove her out to a wooded area at the end of Gunsmith Road where he stabbed her once in the stomach and again in the neck.
Justice James said Kirby did not apologize to the victim, showed no remorse for his actions and little insight into the seriousness of his actions.
Assistant Crown Attorney Caitlin Downing prosecuted both the sexual assault and kidnapping trials.
In addition to time spent in jail, Kirby will be also added to the sex offenders registry, have to provide DNA, is prohibited from using firearms, will have to forfeit the knives and is not allowed to communicate with the victims.
