This is Safe Boating Week in Quebec (until Tuesday, June 22nd).
During this time the Sûreté du Québec is boosting its nautical patrols.
Police say there are a number of characteristics of responsible boaters, including navigating your vessel while remaining sober- while in Quebec you can drink on your boat, know your limits as conviction under the criminal code for not doing so can be a consequence.
Navigate at a safe speed; determining factors include the ability to see ahead – reduced speed is the only safe speed in fog, haze, rain and darkness.
Wind, water and currents can alter the speed at which your boat changes direction.
Be wary of both natural navigation hazards and other nautical traffic.
Show consideration for other boaters- and, because they may not be as cautious as you are, anticipate their possible poor behaviour and maneouver quickly when called upon.
Prepare your for your outing by having sufficient numbers of life jackets. Wearing them is recommended.
Carry a map with you and check on weather conditions before you embark, and tell someone where you’re going.
Your boat should have a first aid kit, and you should have enough fluids aboard to guard against dehydration.
Above all, you don’t want to fall in the drink when the water is cold as hypothermia is a danger.
