The County of Renfrew is expressing despair after news that the bodies of 215 First Nations children were found at a residential school in BC.
The county lowered its flags in a showing of sorrow and solidarity with Indigenous communities, many of whom had children who never returned from those schools and remain unaccounted for.
In a statement, County warden, Debbie Robinson said, “We hope these precious souls can finally find peace, and we cannot imagine the pain the community must be enduring, but we share your sorrow, and we shall not forget. Locally, we wish to express our continued friendship and support to our friends and neighbours, the Algonquin People during this difficult time.”
The remains of 215 children were found in a mass grave on the grounds of a residential school in Kamloops.
