The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are reminding us of some basic (ATV) all-terrain vehicle safety rules:
Your local municipality will likely have bylaw regulations indicating which roadways allow access to ATV’s.
If there is no bylaw, there is no access.
For those road and highways where your ATV is permitted, you must obey all licensing and operational requirements.
These include having a valid Ontario driver’s licence (G2, M2, or higher)
You must wear a motorcycle helmet with a chin strap that is securely fastened.
You cannot carry passengers on your ATV.
You must drive at speed limits lower than those posted, for example: where the posted speed is 50 kmh, you must drive 20kmh or less.
Like with any other vehicle, don’t drink and drive.
If you register in the warn range during a breath test you’ll receive an immediate licence suspension, beginning at three days and escalating accordingly up to and including forced attendance in a remedial alcohol-education program and mandatory ignition interlock.
If you are 21 years old and under and hold a full-class driver’s licence, you must not drive if you have been drinking alcohol.
