A decision on whether the 2022 Ontario Winter Games will go ahead this year or be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be made in September. The County of Renfrew Development and Property Committee discussed the upcoming event earlier this week.
Lots of planning is underway and if the event can’t take place next year due to the pandemic situation, the games will be postponed, not cancelled, with alternatives dates in 2023 or 2024 if necessary.
As of right now, the event is scheduled for two consecutive weekends from February 24th to 27th, 2022 and March 3rd to 6th, 2022.
The 2022 Ontario Winter Games will feature over 20 different events and has venues spread out all across Renfrew County (including locations in Deep River, Barry’s Bay, Pembroke, Petawawa, Cobden, Renfrew, Calabogie, Arnprior and Ottawa). Roughly 3,500 athletes are expected to compete.
Recruitment of an Ontario Winter Games Coordinator is in its final stages with the position to be filled by mid-March. Virtual orientation for the sub-committee chairs is scheduled for either late March or early April.
