Health Canada has approved the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. This is the second vaccine to fight the virus that has been approved for use in Canada.
The vaccine is indicated for use in people 18 years of age or older. Moderna is currently conducting additional studies in children from 12 years of age and older, and this indication could be revised in the future to include children if the data from these studies support it.
Up to 168-thousand doses of the drug developed by Moderna are due to arrive in Canada before the end of the month. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said deliveries could begin within 48 hours of approval.
Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will closely monitor the safety of the Moderna vaccine once it is on the market and will not hesitate to take action if any safety concerns are identified.
Last week the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for COVID-19 were administered last week (December 15th) to healthcare workers in Ottawa.
