A rally is planned next week outside the office of MPP John Yakabuski in Pembroke.
The President of the Ontario Council of Hospitals Unions for CUPE, Michael Hurley, says roughly half a million employees in the province have had their workplace rights suspended. More than 130,000 CUPE front-line workers in health care, social services and municipalities are among those workers. Hurley says issues normally regulated by a collective agreement are being suppressed by Bill 195.
Hurley adds the government passed Bill 195 in July which extends the collective agreement overrides for at least a year, up to three years.
He says this means employees can be moved from the day shift to night shift, regardless of if they have daycare, you could be moved to another community, your job could be eliminated and your parental leave and vacation can be pulled back.
Hurley is encouraging members of the public to show their support at 11:00 am outside the Victoria Centre on Isabella Street in Pembroke.
On Monday (August 17th), 22 protests will be taking place at constituency offices across Ontario.
