The MRC Pontiac is advising of mandatory mask wearing rules coming to the municipality, effective this coming Saturday (July 18th).
Wearing a mask in public spaces becomes compulsory across Quebec on that day.
The ruling excludes individuals with existing medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask, and children under age 12 (although masks are recommended for the kids).
People who wish to visit an enclosed public place – a shop, a grocery store, a shopping mall, a sports centre, (as examples) – will have to wear a mask, otherwise they can be denied access.
The move is supported by Warden Jane Toller, who says, “we must continue to protect our vulnerable region and population.’’
People won’t be fined for not wearing a mask; that onus is on the businesses they visit who turn a blind eye, and it is the shop that will pay the penalty.
There will be a two-week period of grace for implementation, and after this the goverment will levy fines where necessary.
