We haven’t been updating court cases gripping the attention of Valley listeners, because COVID has most everything on hold across the nation’s judicial system- but a committee is working on that.
The Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of Canada (and Chairperson of the Canadian Judicial Council), and the Honorable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, have established an Action Committee on Court Operations in Response to COVID-19.
While Canada’s courts have continued to operate, it has been to give priority to the most urgent cases- operations have been significantly cut back in response to physical distancing and other health and safety requirements.
The committee first met in early May.
The Action Committee will provide leadership on how to resume ordered operations of the system when the time comes.
Getting the judicial system back in gear will be crucial to a broader national recovery.
Guidelines the action committee is preparing are expected to be useful to the various court jurisdictions across the country.
