All upcoming St. Patrick’s Day events in Douglas and Dacre have been postponed.
Mayor Michael Donohue says we are faced with an unprecedented challenge in regards to the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak. Donohue says while the risk to local residents remains low, the risk is real.
Donohue says they will not have any St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at the DACA Centre in Dacre. Donohue adds all events at the Douglas Tavern have also been postponed. He says he’s happy to see the event organizers looking out for the best interests of the community and making responsible decisions. St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th and the mayor says they were expecting a large crowd in Douglas.
Donohue emphasized the fact that the events have been postponed with a possibility to host the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at a later date.
Today (March 13th), Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health recommended the immediate suspension of all large events and gathers of over 250 people due to the coronavirus. Organizers of small gatherings are advised to contact their local public health unit for recommendations.
