Soldiers from Petawawa are training in Africa. As part of the annual military and law enforcement training, Exercise Flintlock looks to strengthen key forces throughout Africa.
The exercise is designed to counter violent extremist organizations, protect borders and provide security for local people. According to the United States Africa Command Team, Exercise Flintlock 2020 will take place at multiple locations in Mauritania and Senegal between February 17th and 28th.
This year’s training exercise involves roughly 1,600 troops from over 30 African and partner nations including the Canadian Special Operations Regiment. Other international partners include Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
