Local police have charged three people who were either ice fishing or snowmobiling. Over the first two days in February, police charged three individuals in separate incidents. The OPP says the Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement or SAVE unit targets high-risk operator behaviors on waterways and trails, regardless of season.
The first incident was on February 1st on Muskrat Lake, where a 47-year-old from Laurentian Valley was charged for not wearing a helmet. The same day, officers charged a 26-year-old from Ottawa for having open liquor while ice fishing on Muskrat Lake. The next afternoon, the OPP checked on a snowmobile that was stopped near the OFSC trail on Shaw Woods Road in North Algona Wilberforce. The 60-year-old local man was charged with having open liquor in a vehicle and police seized the alcohol.
Officers also responded to a single vehicle snowmobile collision in Laurentian Valley Township on February 8th. Police say an adult male suffered non-life threatening injuries after their snowmobile struck a tree along Twin Lake Trail. According to the OPP, paramedics used a snow machine and trailer to bring the victim to a waiting ambulance.
