A Pembroke woman is undergoing ground-breaking surgery today in Ottawa. Sandra Lowe has been suffering from trigeminal nerve pain for the last 30-years. Her husband Kenneth says it’s described by doctors as one of the most debilitating pains you can suffer from. The trigeminal nerve carries sensation from your face to your brain and Ken says the pain his wife feels is in behind her upper left cheek. He says the surgery she will be undergoing today (Feb. 11th) is the first of its kind.
Lowe says his wife underwent compression surgery under her eye a few years ago that helped with pain reduction for a few months. He adds the new surgery involves taking a piece of muscle from her leg and connecting it to the nerve that’s causing problems. Lowe says his wife helps people with developmental disabilities and this pain has impacted her ability to do that.
The couple is hopeful this groundbreaking surgery will not only help Sandra, but others who are also in similar pain.
