The Pembroke Boxing Gym recently sent eight local athletes to the largest amateur boxing event in Ontario. The Brampton Cup tournament took place this past weekend (Jan. 31st – Feb. 2nd, 2020).
Two-time provincial champ with Olympic aspirations, 16-year-old Andrew “Golden Boy” Burgoyne, took home gold. Grade 12-student at Fellowes High School in Pembroke, Laura “The Pitbull” Maves locked up a 3rd round TKO to win gold. 14-year-old Brooklyn “Superfly” Gardner won silver, and 14-year-old Riley Logan won bronze in his first competition. Both are students at Fellowes in Pembroke.
Despite a fantastic performance, 15-year-old Dalton Vansnick, wasn’t able to come away with a win. Making his debut in the adult division, Cody Zadow fought his heart out, but came up short. One of the best fighters at the Pembroke Boxing Club, Mackenna Van Boekel, suffered a hard loss in a fast paced bout. While he didn’t come away with a win, Timmy Pullin Jr. made his debut and represented the City of Pembroke at an event with boxers from around the world.
