Hooray for Coaches Day is presented by Mickey’s Sports and Promotions. We are profiling Jason Smith of Renfrew.
Jason Smith is a father of one, with his partner Nicole. Between work and hobbies, Jason has been active in the community in a variety of capacities, including the former local drama troupe, LAFT, as well as his involvement with Community Living, where he worked with members of our community with special needs. Jason explains he was smaller than most kids his age and quite often found himself bullied in his youth. This encouraged him to join the wrestling team in in high school. He loved the sport and adds he enjoys aggressive, physical activity. This paved the way to Jiu Jitsu, a sport that grew in popularity largely in part to MMA (mixed martial arts) fights and once he tried it, he was hooked. He’s worked his way through traditional Jiu Jitsu before discovering Brazilian and now runs his own dojo in Renfrew. He says the sport is not for everyone, but does note women tend to excel in the practice. Smith told us ‘Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches women they are stronger than they thought they are, and teaches men they’re not as strong as they thought they were.’ He went on to say because women are thinkers, they tend to do well in BJJ.
