Our local MP is challenging other MP’s to learn about guns and gun safety over the Christmas break. Cheryl Gallant is asking MP’s country wide to take one weekend over the winter Parliamentary recess to complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. Gallant says Trudeau’s new Minister for Public Safety is compiling a secret list of firearms he intends to unilaterally re-classify from restricted to prohibited. This means Members of Parliament may have to vote on it and Gallant says unfortunately, many MP’s will be voting on an issue they have little experience with. Worse yet, she says most of the information they have comes from the U.S., which has very different gun laws. Gallant’s letter was prompted by calls in the Throne Speech to ban “military-style” and “assault-style” firearms. She says taking the courses and passing the firearms exams would deepen Members’ understanding of Canadian laws already in place, and the hurdles involved in becoming a law-abiding firearms owner.
