Algonquin College in Pembroke is planning for the future with programs leading into high demand jobs. Pembroke campus Dean Keltie Jones says they will be introducing courses for computer programming, environmental management and assessment and developmental services workers.
Jones sadds PSW’s are in high demand and they’re offering a program every fall in Pembroke and this coming January at Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew. While presenting to Pembroke and Petawawa council, one of the concerns raised was the lack of opportunities for trades training in the county. Jones says they’re working to meet the needs of the labour force.
Jones talked about offering a pre-apprenticeship program for electricians and carpentry and developing a plan and strategy for trades at the Pembroke and Perth campuses. Jones says there are developments in the works for more housing, which will help house students.
The Algonquin College Pembroke Campus has between 20 and 25 international students, almost 550 first year students with over half of them coming from out of town. The college has grown to 1,000 students and offers 20 full time programs. Some of the courses offered locally are for business, social science, health science, action sports park development, early childhood education, police foundations, forestry technicians, nuclear science and radiation safety and more.
