Area teachers say they’re fighting for your child’s right to a quality education. Classes in high schools and kindergarten rooms were shut down today in the Renfrew County District School Board and in some French Board schools as teachers walked out for a single day strike. Michael Wright, a teacher at RCI and second Vice President of the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation says they want the government to revisit, what the union sees, as poor decisions that are impacting the learning environment.
The province says the main issue is compensation after they capped wage increases at one percent for all public sector workers. Wright admits that’s true, but he says the union’s request is not unreasonable.
Wright tells us he’s grateful for the support of the community and says although they’ll return to the classroom tomorrow, they’re not done fighting.
The boards cancelled impacted classes today to ensure the safety of all their students.
