Members from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action should it become necessary. Education workers voted 92 per cent in favour while teachers and occasional teachers provided a 95.5 per cent strike mandate.
OSSTF President Harvey Bischof says they are committed to defending the quality of education in Ontario against a government that is determined to undermine it. Bischof says they gave notice to bargain almost seven months ago, but are still waiting for one meaningful, serious response to key proposals including class sizes and mandated e-learning.
Although the OSSTF now has a clear strike mandate from its members the union has not yet announced that it will be taking job action. Bischof says they’re at the bargaining table again today instead of being on the picket line as they could have been. The OSSTF President says members are committed to looking for solutions through negotiations and he hopes the Ford government seeks the same.
