They want your social insurance number, so keep it close to the vest, and never share it with someone who called you. Renfrew OPP are currently investigating several complaints from residents who say they were contacted by someone claiming to be with the authorities, saying the victim’s SIN has been compromised. They threaten the resident with legal action if they don’t confirm their number right away. They use this sense of urgency as a tool to panic their victims into cooperating. Police say once scammers have your number they can create new identities under your SIN and remind you to not share any personal information with anyone until you can verify who they are and if they’re reason for calling is legit. If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, you’re encouraged to call the police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
