PTSD is often associated with traumas that arise from combat situations, but Naomi Fong’s career as a bombardier came crashing down around her when she fell victim to sexual assaults initiated by her comrades.
It’s been a long way back to embracing community, but it’s a road that included her participation in the Invictus Games, where, in the process of applying to compete, she decided to reveal the underlying cause of her PTSD.
By talking about it, Naomi believes others may not feel alone in their situations. She says creating a life you want to show up for everyday takes time.
Naomi Fong carried Canada’s Flag at the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney Australia, winning two bronze medals in cycling.
At the same time, Naomi was embracing the supports available through enrolment in the Social Service Worker Program at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus.
Naomi Fong has graduated with honours from Algonquin College, and today she will be recognized with an Award of Distinction at the facility’s Alumni of Distinction Awards Gala.
Naomi claims the Recent Graduate Award, and is one of eleven individuals to be honoured.
The ceremony will be held this evening at Algonquin’s Minto Hall in Ottawa.
