Laurentian Valley council is looking to get some answers about flooding. On Tuesday night, an extensive resolution was passed requesting the provincial and federal governments conduct a truly independent review of the existing dam and reservoir infrastructure in the Ottawa River watershed. Mayor Steve Bennett says they are looking for ways to prevent future flooding.
The township is also requesting a review of the policies and procedures of the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board and is suggesting the province should train special volunteers for emergency situations to respond to specific types of disasters. Other requests from the flooding resolution include changing eligibility requirements for financial assistance to include seasonal residences such as cottages. They’d also like a study to be done to see if it’s possible to increase reservoir capacity along the Ottawa River. The resolution will be passed on to various other councils for support, local provincial and federal representatives, along with the special advisor appointed to review the flooding in Ontario this year.
