The Federal New Democratic Party Nomination Convention has chosen Eganville educator Eileen Jones-Whyte as its candidate for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.
About 50 voting members selected Jones-Whyte over Chalk River Engineer Kurt Stoll at a party meeting held at the Cobden Legion last night.
With some doubt the NDP will field a full slate of candidates nationwide, the local situation seems to be bucking a trend; this was the first time in 15 years that the party had more than one nominee to choose from locally.
Jones-Whyte feels confident Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke voters will see through incumbent Cheryl Gallant’s customary pro-gun agenda.
The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke candidate joins a busy ballot whose names include Conservative Cheryl Gallant, Green Party representative Ian Pineau, Independent candidate Dan Criger, Liberal Ruben Marini, and David Ainsworth of the PPC.
