The Canada Cup Freestyle Ski event is coming to Renfrew County. The provincial government will fund the event taking place at Calabogie Peaks in Greater Madawaska Township. The Canada Cup Freestyle Ski event takes place from January 16th to 19th, 2020 and is expected to generate $75,000 for the local economy. Calabogie Peaks is also planning on hosting a NORAM ski cross event in February bringing athletes from 13 different nations around the world to the area. Staff says they are working hard to continue to be a venue for high level events. Chief Operating Officer at Calabogie Peaks Resort, Jim Hemlin, says the Canada Cup Freestyle Ski event will bring together athletes and coaches and family members.
Hemlin says anyone who comes to watch will get to see the skiers go down the hill over moguls, hitting jumps and doing aerial tricks, similar to what you would see in the Olympics.
The 2020 Canada Cup Freestyle Ski event is one of 15 sporting events funded by the provincial government across Ontario. MPP John Yakabuski says by bringing more world-class sporting events like this to Greater Madawaska, we can showcase all that Ontario has to offer. The County of Renfrew has also submitted a bid to host the Ontario Youth Winter games in 2022 at Calabogie. This would be the first time an Ontario Youth Winter Games is hosted in Eastern Ontario and it’s expected that an announcement will be made shortly in regards to whether the county was successful or not with their application.
