An investigation has been launched into complaints of harassment and unprofessional behaviour in the Canadian Armed Forces mission in Latvia. According to reports from the National Post, an investigation was launched last year after staff openly mocked the senior leadership in Canada, circulated negative cartoons about the military’s gender advisor and conducted a whisper campaign against an incoming officer. The investigation focused on the J9 section of Canada’s Task Force Latvia. The report also highlights morale problems for the task force including unfair policies on alcohol, how only some military personnel are allowed to travel outside of the base and lack of support for reservists. Soldiers from Petawawa have been deployed to assist with NATO operations in Latvia. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NATO General Jens Stoltenberg recently visited Garrison Petawawa to highlight the important role the Canadian military plays in missions overseas. The number of Canadian troops deployed in Latvia will increase to 540 as the mission is expected to continue until March of 2023.
